Medicate My Problems Away
People often try to medicate away adversity. This actually has the reverse effect. Dealing with adversity naturally is what helps people mature and become actualized. Medicating when anxiety, sadness or stress arises causes people to rely on medication to make them feel better instead of relying on themselves. As a result they never overcome their adversity (which would improve their ability to handle the next adversity) so when more problems arise and they always will they decompensate and end up taking more or additional medication to cope.
One of my favorite quotes is “The manner in which you handle adversity defines your character”. Adversity (problems, stress) is an opportunity for you to grow and develop your character. Medicating away problems and stress stops this process. Although there are people with true panic attacks and severe chronic anxiety that may require medication, the majority of people that are given pills like Valium and Xanax are simply using them to deal with the stressors of daily life. Doing this actually weakens your character because the character is not allowed to naturally develop. Sadly people rapidly become physically and psychologically dependent on these medications and feel they need them simply to get up and function in their daily lives. Once again this is great for the pharmaceutical companies but a nightmare for the people taking these medications.
