Ass Backwards Medicine. Emphasizing Treatments Instead of Prevention
Our system of medicine (for chronic disease) likes to cure what should have never happened. I read an article in Nov of 2014 regarding Google storing everyone’s DNA in their cloud servers. The thought process was how great it would be for doctors and researchers to have everyone’s DNA at their disposal so if you got cancer they could cure it.
Deniz Kural, CEO of Seven Bridges, a company that is currently storing genome information on Amazon’s cloud servers says:
“Google or Amazon is a back end. They are saying, ‘Hey, you can build a genomics company in our cloud.’ Our bird’s eye view is that if I were to get lung cancer in the future, doctors are going to sequence my genome and my tumor’s genome, and then query them against a database of 50 million other genomes. The result will be ‘Hey, here’s the drug that will work best for you.”
There are so many things wrong with this I could go on for hours but 2 things stand out. First our society completely ignores the role of all of the things causing cancer and chronic disease in the first place. Processed food full of cancer-causing chemicals, toxicities in the water and the environment; a medical system that is pharmaceutical based that promotes drugs as the cure which in turn cause side effects and further disease. So much money is spent on the treatment of preventable disorders such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic pain and substance abuse. If there was an emphasis on prevention and actually curing the root cause of medical problems, medical insurance would be cheaper and the population as a whole would flourish. BUT I guess that wouldn’t be profitable…
The other glaring issue is having everyone’s genome on some company’s cloud server. The opportunity for corruption and abuse of this information is infinite. It would make the NSA look like child’s play.
